2013 State of the Girl Address

Welcome to the 2013 GirlAlive.com State of the Girl Address.

The last year has been both eventful and deadly boring. Let’s go over the highlights together.

Employment

This year has not been a financially rewarding one, but it has been interesting. I have been doing some freelance writing, and I also got my book, An American Guide to Britishness published.

The book has had mostly good reviews, among intelligent and well-informed readers. It has had terrible reviews from people who used to live in the UK and were looking for some kind of nostalgic tome recalling how great the UK is at everything. Because, you know, someone who lived in the UK twenty years ago obviously knows more about it that someone who lives there RIGHT NOW. Not that I’m bitter. But that one guy on Goodreads can totally go to hell.

I should be working on one or more novels and also a non-fiction book about monsters. But work has not been happening as much as it should lately.

Wildlife

We currently have two dwarf hamsters, Sheldon and Leonard. Leonard does not like to be touched and Sheldon poops in his dust bath. Leonard is brown. Sheldon looks like animate dryer lint.

We also still have our guinea pig, Spike. Spike is over seven years old now. He has stopped squeaking. Now when he wants food, he just stares at us.

We plan to acquire a chinchilla at some point. Cause I begged and begged because I’ve wanted one forever and husband has relented. But he says we have to clean the living room first.

Relationships

I am still happily married to Husband. At least, I’m happy to be married to him. I can’t say whether he’s glad he married a loser who can’t keep a real job.

Health

Husband has back problems and digestive problems. My hair continues to fall out. But I’ve learned to knit a variety of hats.

I still have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. I am still bi-polar. I still do not enjoy those things.

Travel

We went to Minnesota. Then Wisconsin, Illinois and Iowa. Then we went back to Minnesota and flew home.

Family

I got to see a lot of my family and friends in the US. I went to my cousin’s wedding, which was awesome fun. I haven’t seen Husband’s family for a while, but we hope to get down to England to see them sometime this year.

Internets

I have been occasionally posting on Facebook, but I mostly just go there to play ChefVille and QwizShow. I post on Twitter sporadically. I spend about 6 hours a day on Tumblr. I’ve been keeping record of my reading habits on GoodReads.

I have not been posting here because it is not as convenient as Tumblr and I am lazy.
